Back light can be pointed at the background to soften shadows or outline the subject and separates it from the background.
Key light is the main light that lights the subject.
Fill light is the light that fills the shadows created by the key light.
TRY THIS (If trying at home find a painters light or a lamp)
Using the visual on the bottom make the following 4 pictures of a friend's face.
The key is to only use only one light to get a gradient of light like seen above.
1. Light from the right (as shown in the image)
2. Light from the left
3. Light from below
4. Light from above
