Restoring Old Photographs
is a good way to learn basic photoshop tools.

Here are some simple ways to experiment:

  1. FIND an old photograph or a wrinkled or ripped up image.

  2. TAKE A CLEAR PICTURE of it (from the top) with your cell phone or scan it on a scanner.

  3. OPEN IMAGE IN PHOTOSHOP and begin.  Go to Photoshop 101 page to know the tools.

  4. CROP, STRAIGHTEN or ROTATE the image.

  5. Apply a filter to reduce noise by using FILTER - NOISE/ DUST & SCRATCHES.

  6. Touch of up spots, and rips, using SPOT HEALING BRUSH, CLONE STAMP, or PATCH TOOL.

  7. Make color corrections using COLOR, CONTRAST, VIBRANCE, TONE, EXPOSURE, etc.

  8. If you still need more tools, begin to GOOGLE ONLINE for more options.

  9. SAVE the image as a PSD file (Photoshop only file) to be able to allow for revisions later.
To email or post on blog SAVE as JPEG.

  10. Congratulations, you just learned some basic tools and techniques in photoshop.

  11. When sharing this work, always share the before and after of the image so we can see your work.

Re-Generation by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew

She makes photo animations from archival images of three or more generations of women where the figures appear in and out of the image over time.
It explores themes of family history and memory.
